Who Are We?

We are the Izaak Walton Cottage Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America: based in Staffordshire, England, and constituted under the auspices of the U.S. parent body. We set ourselves up in 2002, in response to the concern of the Izaak Walton League of America that the Cottage was at risk of being closed and echoing the popular feeling amongst people in Staffordshire that ways should be found of preserving the Cottage as a public building.

Because of the Trustee status of the Cottage with Stafford Borough Council, a buy-out of the cottage is not an option now.

At that time, Stafford Borough Council - owner, manager and trustee of Izaak Walton Cottage - was considering devolution of management and even transfer of ownership in its effort to reduce expenditure. Since then, the Borough has re-affirmed its intention of retaining the Cottage but with reduced hours of opening. The Chapter's Objects are to support the Borough in its efforts to increase public attendance at the Cottage by improving its facilities, promoting special events and activities, and publicising its existence.

The Izaak Walton League of America has a membership of 40,000. Whilst in England Izaak Walton is known primarily as the author of The Compleat Angler, in America it is his approach to the rural environment as a whole which holds the public interest: the League is dedicated to protecting soil, air, woods, waters and wildlife in the interest of bio-diversity and the quality of human life. The League and its constituent chapters are registered as charities under the U.S. Revenue's 501(c)3 regulations; the Cottage chapter has set up an associated U.K. charity, the Izaak Walton Cottage Fund (registered charity no. 1101295) which manages those elements of the Chapter's finances which bear on the promotion of the Cottage and the League's environmental and conservation objects.

This site is maintained by the United Kingdom, Izaak Walton Cottage Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America.
